The typical gastronomy of Sant Joan d’Alacant is based on the products of the land, the Huerta Alicante, which makes it a combination of varied and healthy products, essence of the Mediterranean diet. During the 18th century the agricultural exploitation was focused mainly on the wine production, the fondillón, which was, without discussion, the main harvest of the Region L’Alacantí.
In traditional cuisine rice is the protagonist in almost all the dishes standing out the rice ‘a la alicantina’ (Alacant style), the rice with onion and among the vegetables recipes, the ‘olleta’. The ‘putxero amb tarongetes’ is still the dish for the important celebrations.

Other typical sweet products made in the bakeries of Sant Joan d’Alacant and Benimagrell are the ‘rollos’ (sweet bun with circular shape) and the ‘toña’(cake made with oil and honey), which with small variations, becomes the ‘monas’ (rosca with egg) of the Easter days.
The ‘cocas saladas’ (salted cakes) like the ‘coca de Sant Joan’, ‘coca amb tonyina’ (with tuna), ‘coca’ of sardines with tomatoes and peppers and ‘coca amb molletes’(bread crumbs), are also traditional.
